Elvis Sibeko

Elvis Sibeko’s love for dance was nurtured at an early age when he danced as an extra-mural activity at Phandimfundo Secondary School. This promising young artist joined Jazzart Dance Theatre’s Performance Company (www.jazzart.co.za) in 2012 after completing the Jazzart three-year Training Programme in 2011.

Prior to joining Jazzart Elvis worked at Tribhangi Dance Theatre as a professional dancer from February 2007 to November 2008, he had previously trained with them in dance styles such as Indian, Traditional and Gumboots. Elvis also danced with the Leerhuleni Educational Theatre and worked as a dance teacher and choreographer with Lily School of Arts.

Elvis was a 2009 nominee for the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella’s Most Promising Dancer award and was awarded a bursary as the Most Promising Dancer at the Jazzart Dance Theatre Training Programme in 2010.  Waiting for Rain (2011), in the opera Viva la Mama (2012), African Songbook and Partly God (2009).
Elvis choreographed for Mixing It Up and the Western Cape Department of Education Arts Focus Schools Green Point Park production, both in 2012. His performance and choreography artistry was also recognised earlier which is evidenced by a succession of accolades achieved in youth festivals and community dance projects.

During Jazzart’s Training Programme, between 2010 and 2011 Elvis implemented an outreach intervention with Vacbas Nu-legends Performing Art where he worked as a dance teacher, choreographer and on developing their community development practice.  He also worked as a community development practitioner in Nyanga and at the Thandokhulu High School.  His community involvement dates back to him offering dance workshops on a voluntary basis in Daveyton, his hometown and the establishment of the Daveyton Dance Foundation. To consolidate his interest in community development Elvis has completed his Higher Education and Training Certificate in Development Practice and recently established the Masifundisane Educational Dance Project. He is currently establishing Daveyton Schools Development Project that will be base on his hometown. Elvis believe that one day his talent and creativity will change the hopeless and give them power for a better life.

While at Jazzart he worked as assistant to the dance teacher at the Eersterivier and Wynberg High Schools focusing on Afro-fusion, Gumboots and Pansula dance styles and the Jazzart technique.  Elvis is a skilled choreographer, teacher, DJ and music composer.
